Santa Cruz Main Beach

No trip to San Jose is complete without a visit to the famous Santa Cruz Main Beach. Also hailed as the Boardwalk Beach, you can enjoy 3 miles of path packed with everything you need for a whole day of fun. 

Although technically, it’s not one of the beaches in San Jose, a little detour to the shores of Boardwalk Beach is a must. Play volleyball, shop around, enjoy fresh seafood, or a sip of Tequila Sunrise, there are plenty of activities to do. 

Families will have fun with the gentle waters, ensured by the safety of lifeguards on duty. There’s also an amusement park with exciting rides like The Cliffhanger, Cave Train, and Giant Dipper (just to name a few!). 

Expect heavy crowds, especially during summer, holidays, and weekends. There are also some complaints about water quality sometimes, so check before wading in. But other than that, Santa Cruz Main Beach is a lovely place to enjoy the sun, swim and soak up the local scenes. 

Natural Bridges State Beach

You probably already saw this Instagrammable spot on your feed. The Natural Bridges State Beach and its golden shores charm everyone who visits. The famous rock arch in the waters is the main attraction, but there are plenty of things to discover and enjoy here, making it one of the best beaches in San Jose. 

Since it’s part of the 65-acre Natural Bridges State Park, there’s more to your visit than just the beach and its beauty. You can easily spend an entire day here. You can also follow trails where you might encounter the native monarch butterflies in the area. And if you come around during low tide, you’re in time to experience the tidepools, where plenty of tiny sea creatures appear. 

We know how enticing it is to climb up the rock arch and take a jump. But no! It’s prohibited. You can come near it and admire it up close, but climbing is illegal. Don’t forget your camera and wait for the sunset when the allure of Natural Bridges State Beach is at its finest. 

Capitola Beach

Heading to the northern end of Monterey Bay, around 42 minutes from San Jose, you’ll reach the vibrant shores of Capitola Beach. Cull Canyon requires advanced reservation since the administration is trying to avoid overcrowding. 

The kids can swim, and for the tweens and teens who want some adrenaline rush, there’s a diving deck they can launch on. But! Anyone who wants to try it out has to pass a swimming test beforehand. 

Whether with your family or friends or going solo, the cool waters of Cull Canyon will refresh you. You can also bring your fur baby to explore the surrounding trails. However, they’re not allowed in the swimming area. 

Ano Nuevo State Park

If you want all-out fun while at the beaches in San Jose, the Ano Nuevo State Park should be on your list. Although it’s a little over an hour away, your trip will be rewarded generously. There are woodlands you can explore and a beautiful strand of beach, and if you’re around between December and March, you’ll see one of the biggest elephant seal migrations of your life. 

Now, you must book a tour reservation in advance since it gets sold out pretty quickly. A self-guided walk throughout the area also needs a permit you can get for free from the Marine Educational Center. 

Swimming at the beach offers an alternative to the warm waters, an excellent place to counter summer heat. You can also unroll a mat, enjoy a picnic, or head to the Visitor Center for an educational detour. 

It’s one of those beaches in San Jose that can accommodate you whether you want to be surrounded by trees, wade in the cold waters, or observe wildlife. The Ano Nuevo State Park offers you the opportunity to experience it all. 

Gray Whale Cove

Stretching 800 feet long, the shore of Gray Whale Cove offers one of the most secluded beaches in San Jose. It was even known as a clothing-optional beach before it was established as a state park in 1966. 

Sitting in a 3.1 acre area, you can enjoy the trail through the 150-step wooden stairs that wind down to the beach or enjoy the view from the top. And, as the name suggests, there are frequent sightings of gray whales here (you might be lucky to spot some during your visit! If you visit during spring, the trails are packed with wildflowers, and the sun’s heat is just right without burning you. 

Enjoy paddling the waters or just chill by the shores while reading or listening to music. You can swing on top of the bluff while enjoying the view. If you want more fun, detour the neighboring Devil’s Slide or Montara Mountain. 

Davenport Landing Beach

This 1-mile gem an hour away from San Jose is another treat for those who seek seclusion and quiet. With that in mind, there are no concessions around and lifeguards. You’re on your own.  

What we enjoyed about Davenport Landing Beach is the simplicity and tranquility it offers. It may not be as exciting as more popular beaches in San Jose, but that’s precisely the point. No crowds. No noise. (Although weekends can bring in some folks to the shores). Although it’s not secluded since it’s near the highway with few residential homes near the beach, the ambiance of silence and crashing waves is enough to relax and recharge you. 

When the winds are up, Davenport Landing Beach also becomes alive, with kitesurfers taking advantage of the weather. There are also tidepools on the beach’s northern and southern ends, which you can enjoy during low tides. 

If you’re searching for unspoiled beaches in San Jose, Davenport Landing is the way to go. 

Pescadero State Beach

Pescadero State Beach is another option for visitors who want to avoid heavy crowds. The shores here are packed with beautiful rocks and shells, and although it’s very tempting to pick them up and bring them back home, it’s prohibited. 

The picturesque views paired with the roaring waves are a sight that anyone who appreciates beauty in silence will love. We don’t recommend getting in the waters here since they are powerful and might suck you far and out. But if you’re an experienced surfer, the waves here will satisfy you (bring a wetsuit!). 

Pescadero State Beach is a place to meditate and think about life. And if you’re in for it, create your own driftwood structure as a reminder of your visit. After getting your beach fix here, you can visit the nearby Pescadero Marsh Natural Preserve, where hundreds of bird species await. For couples out there, you’ll catch one of the most romantic sunsets in California here. 

New Brighton State Beach

If you’re searching for beaches in San Jose to camp overnight, add New Brighton State Beach to your list. The waters are also generally calm, and lifeguards are on duty, so you don’t have to worry if you’re visiting with kids. 

You and your family can enjoy swimming, sharing a picnic with the overlooking ocean view (the sunsets here are to die for!), and checking out the trails in the area. And if you love riding waves, some rideable swells are here, especially during hurricane season. 

Now, if you’re camping, you need plenty of quarters to fund your showers. They cost fifty cents/minute. The standard campsite also costs $35, and you must make a reservation in advance. 

A night at New Brighton State Park will refresh you if you’re done with the hectic lifestyle. 

Carmel City Beach

You’ll reach Carmel City Beach’s beautiful coast, just an hour from San Jose. There are various entry points to this 1-mile white sand gem, and it can get pretty busy. But if you want some space on your own, access it via the main entrance at Ocean Avenue. 

Besides the beach, you can also follow the Carmel Scenic Pathway that leads to an overlook with a stunning ocean view, with Point Lobos and Pebble Beach on the frame. And if you want to play sports, there are also volleyball courts.

Rio del Mar Beach

You can’t skip seeing the concrete SS Palo Alto that once served as an entertainment ship but is now a paradise for birds. There used to be a wooden pier leading to the boat, but with all the damage from hurricanes and typhoons, it was finally demolished in early 2023. You can still observe it from the shores or paddle on the waters to observe it up close.

San Gregorio State Beach

Picnic on top of the bluffs? Why not! The scenic views at the San Gregorio State Beach cliffs make a postcard-worthy shot. Your eyes can savor the view of the sky, the open waters contrasting with the cliffs. 

Head down to the beach, go swimming, or get evenly baked. You’ll also spot the San Gregorio Creek flowing to the ocean. Pomponio State Beach is at its southern end, while caves with ancient fossils are on the north. Now, a warning, if you carry on north, you will reach a loathing-optional beach known as San Gregorio Private Beach. Unless you’re ok with that, don’t go past the caves. 

Overall, San Gregorio State Beach is a tucked-away gem. An excellent spot for a laid-back day at one of the best beaches in San Jose. And with that, you must pack up everything you need during your visit since there are no concessions or establishments in the area. 

Marina State Beach

Massive dunes and roaring waves will welcome you at Marina State Beach, just an hour from San Jose. If you want everything for free, add this spot to your itinerary. No parking fee. No entrance fee. One of the most unique beaches in San Jose, what separates Marina State Beach from the rest is its dunes that serve as a take-off point for hang gliders who want to take advantage of the strong winds. If you’ve never tried it before, here’s your chance. 

There’s also the accessible 2.3-mile out-and-back Dune Nature Trail. Although the trail is not technical, you need some mindful footing since it will be sandy throughout the journey. You might also spot surfers conquering the swells. Taking the surroundings from the shores is just as good if you’re not confident with your swimming skills. Many visitors even stay in their cars while enjoying food and the beautiful sunset. 

Monterey Municipal Beach

One of the busiest beaches in San Jose that made it to our list, Monterey Municipal Beach is accessible to everyone and equipped with everything you need for an entire day of stay- restrooms, shops, restaurants, and kayak rentals. 

The waters here are friendly, so even kids can wade through the waters safely. And if you’re an angler, you’ll love spending time at the pier with your line out. It’s also an excellent spot to spot whales. 

Monterey Municipal Beach also has a grassy area where you can unroll a mat for a picnic or smash some spikes at the volleyball court. The Monterey Bay Coastal Recreational Trail and its paved path are at your disposal whether you want to go running or biking. Don’t forget to grab some souvenirs by the shops at the pier! 

Scott Creek Beach

Scott Creek Beach is the definition of raw beauty. No facilities at all! It’s just you, the dunes, and the waters. Rarely crowded, you can enjoy some me-time as long as you want. The waves here are savage, so swimming isn’t the most fun. But for surfers, it’s a total treat. Kitesurfing is also popular at Scott Creek Beach, and if you’re around on a  low tide, you can play at the tide pools on the north end of the shore. 

Since there’s literally nothing here other than the beach itself, you need to bring everything. Plus, if you need to go number two, you’re in trouble. Parking is also challenging since you need to maneuver along Hwy 1 with vehicles going at least 60 mph. 

But all in all, for a soft sanded beach straight out of painting, the serenity at Scott Creek makes it one of the best beaches in San Jose. 

Four Mile Beach

A secluded spot where you can enjoy the beauty of the beach without all the noise, the hidden shores of Four Mile Beach are a surfers’ paradise. But when the days are calm, anyone who visits loves its powdered sand and warm waters. You can also spot marine wildlife like seals and whales. If you head north to the boulders, you’ll find plenty of critters hiding. There’s also a lookout where you can get amazing views. 

Another treat you can take is hiking up the trail on the bluffs until you reach a couple of more tucked-away beaches in San Jose, Strawberry Beach, and Three Mile Beach. Now, these are clothing-optional ones, so if you’re conservative, they might not be for you. But you’ll love these alternatives if you want to experience this version of freedom. 

Bean Hollow State Beach

This gem is a combination of two coves separated by a rock formation. Roughly an hour away from San Jose, Bean Hollow State Beach is home to the fascinating honeycomb-like rock formations known as tafoni rocks. 

Beachcombing and sunbathing are the main activities here, along with tracing the 2-mile nature trail connecting the beach to its neighbor Pebble Beach. You can get plenty of souvenirs here too. Beautiful stones, such as jade, moonstone, and agates, packed the shores. 

Fishing is also allowed, but you need a license. Swimming is not for the faint-hearted. The riptides are brutal (of course, if you’re a surfer, this is an excellent opportunity!). Plus, there’s no lifeguard on duty here. 

Picnic tables are also accessible for public use, so don’t forget to pack lunch or snacks. Make it more scenic and be there during a sunset. There are also information boards that show the history of the area and its ecosystem. Traveling with kids? Time your visit during low tide. They will surely enjoy the marine creatures at the tide pools. 

Shark Fin Cove

As the name suggests, Shark Fin Cove is famous for its shark fin rock formation sitting near the shores. It’s one of the most crowd-free beaches in San Jose, where you can enjoy nature’s beauty without distractions. Maybe because there are no amenities/facilities in this spot, so it’s never crowded. 

But that only added to the rawness of the view at Shark Fin Cove. After checking out the rock formation from the overlook (just right next to the highway), you can carefully traverse the steep trail down to the beach. Wear grippy shoes since there’s nothing to assist you on the way down. From there, you will find a sea cave on its right side, while sand packs up on the other. 

Shark Fin Cove may not be as famous as other beaches in San Jose, but its geological wonders are worth the effort. 

Panther Beach

For anyone who is looking for clothing-optional beaches in San Jose, you need to stop by Panther Beach. Officially known as Yellowbank Beach, the bluffs and the rock formations are the main highlights. There’s a passage on one of them called Hole-in-the-Wall, and it’s literally that, a hole that will lead you to another beach (clothing-optional, too, and more discreet). But it’s only accessible during low tides. 

Now, this gorgeous natural treasure can be challenging to access with the steep trail. There are also no facilities around, even restrooms. The riptides are scary, so swimming is not recommended. You need proper planning if you want to stay here for extended hours. 

The overall appeal of Panther Beach is not limited to the waters. Its natural allure is captured in its bluffs, rock formations, and simplicity. 

Waddell Beach

The 1.5-mile-long Waddell Beach is part of the iconic Big Basin Redwoods State Park and a cradle to all sorts of surfers- kite, wind, and the classic surfboarders. If you’re into water sports, the winds and waves here are some of the best you’ll find on other beaches in San Jose. Although if you’re with kids, this might not be the best option. But that doesn’t mean you and your family can’t enjoy the view and the surfers showing off their skills. 

The dunes make long beach walks more pleasurable, and if you can’t go back home without bringing souvenirs, the sand dollars here are some of the most authentic you’ll find. And if you need more than the beach, you can cross the highway and head to Big Basin Redwoods ST for numerous trails and camping opportunities. 

Redondo Beach on Half Moon Bay

With a distinct touch of eroded bluffs, the shores of Redondo Beach in Half Moon Bay offer a secluded getaway from the business of other famous beaches in San Jose. There are no facilities here. It’s just you and nature, an ideal spot for meditation and afternoon walks (sunsets here are stunning!). There’s also the Wavecrest Trail people usually use for biking, running, and horseback riding. 

The trail to the beach is steep and muddy, so wear shoes with excellent traction. There are also no restrooms or lifeguards to keep an eye on swimmers, so be mindful of your surroundings.
